Ciena Corp. today announced the newest edition to its CN4200 family. The CN 4200 RS FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform is designed for service aggregation and wavelength routing, such as high-density metro offices, data centers and head-ends. The system is generally available and already has been selected by a European operator, the company said in a press statement.
“It adds service scalability,” said Vinay Rathore, Ciena’s director of marketing. “It is essentially a bigger box, but more importantly it’s been designed to scale services. So, you can actually support over 5,000 services on a box, which is something that is required for the head end locations.”
Ciena’s CN 4200 family also includes the CN 4200 MC for edge-optimized optical services from the customer premises, the CN 4200 for aggregating services onto rings.
The CN 4200 RS offers four-times the capacity of the original four-slot CN 4200. It has 16 slots and up to 96 ports per chassis with scalability to more than 5,000 ports in a single node. This means service providers can support thousands of application servers.
“The nice part about the 4200 RS is you can put multiple degrees of a ROADM into a single chassis,” said Rathore, noting previously the 4200 gear only supported one degree. “You can actually get four degrees on a single chassis. You can do ring-to-ring connection.”
In addition, he said, you can interconnect different kinds of rings of technology and fee them into a metro network.
In addition, the recently-announced FlexSelect 40G Shelf can be integrated with the CN 4200 RS for delivering in-service upgrades of granular 40G wavelengths to existing 10G networks.
The 4200 platforms offer universal line cards with individual user-programmable ports to deliver TDM, Ethernet and storage services at any speed on any available port, and ITU G.709 OTN for service transparency. Ciena’s CN 4200 family also supports remote service provisioning and management through Ciena’s ON-Center Network and Service Management Suite that offers network operators a unique set of tools for efficient service deployment, proactive network management and service level management.
