PowerNet Global Communications and its partner KW Communications this week deployed a community broadband network that covers the town of Owensboro, Ky.

This is the first community broadband deployment for PowerNet Global. PowerNet partnered with KW Communications on this project LiquidGrid in Owensboro at the end of 2006.

PowerNet Global said it recognized that communities like Owensboro were not receiving the options metropolitan areas have come to expect. “This is a great opportunity to grow our business and to grow the business in the communities of these underserved markets,” said CEO and President Bernie Stevens. “We know that by going in to these rural markets and giving them something they are not getting from anyone else is a great benefit to our business model and an even greater benefit to them.”

The town, with a population of 100,000, has five towers spread across the county that send wireless broadband signals out. These transmission sites cover a 20-square-mile area for bringing broadband Internet access and eventually VoIP to the community.

LiquidGrid was ready to serve customers in the beginning of June.

Community broadband deployments similar to LiquidGrid are being developed in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri.
