The session border controllers of today are “a Band-Aid approach” to security. Customers instead need a more holistic security solution with extensive media handling, redundancy, session control, support for standards and the ability to handle networks with large numbers of subscribers.

That’s the word from Sonus Networks Inc., which on Monday takes the wraps off the latest version of its Network Border Switch. The company said this new version of the NBS extends its strengths from the core to the edge.

The release includes new features to support direct media, denial of service protection for access networks and consumer VoIP deployments, advanced encryption support for call set-up and additional Secure Real Time Protocol (RTP) to protect call content.

These are the kind of features folks are asking of the session border controller vendors, said Chris Drake, vice president of trunking solutions at Sonus. “I think we are where others want to be,” he added.

Sonus said the strength of its NBS solution, now installed with 40 customers, was recently verified by CT Labs

The new release is available now. The company would not comment on pricing.
