It seems surreal to say it, but long-suffering Motorola Inc. (MOT) has at last made a profit.
Who knew? Cell phone sales, of all things, were responsible for the equipment maker’s much-improved earnings in the second quarter of 2008 – a strange turnaround considering no one wanted the company’s most popular phone, the RAZR, after mid-2006. Now analysts wonder if the Schaumberg, Ill., company really must spin off the cell phone division.
