While Netflix Inc.’s (NFLX) deals today with the CBS and Disney Channel enable the DVD renter to provide new TV series episodes the day after they air, the offering is pitted against entrenched competition like VoD options from Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) and others.
Comcast has long had a programming deal with CBS, whereby it provides new episodes through free VoD the next day. The cableco gained acclaim for letting its customers view installments from such CBS favorites as the CSI franchise, Numb3rs, NCIS and Cold Case File, among others.
The cable giant has also added numerous other TV series to its lineup in recent months preparing for the fall season.
The episodes are kept in the VoD library for some months so that those missing their CBS “appointment TV” can catch up with their favorites, even if the viewers are many weeks behind, or just want to review older episodes.
Netflix gets access to the same CBS series, plus Disney Channel shows, under the deal.
Given the proliferation of VoD on traditional TV, the Netflix deal raises questions as to whether viewers would choose to watch the episodes on a TV or PC.
One lure to the Netflix next-day streaming option would be the ability to view prior seasons of shows that likely aren’t held long, or ever, in VoD.
