Telecom/Tech to Get Congress’ Attention This Fall

Congress hasn’t done much in terms of telecom and technology policy this year, but looks like that’s about to change.

As some ISPs cap users’ monthly download capacity, the net neutrality debate reportedly will be at the forefront of debates starting this fall.

Lawmakers’ timing is pretty prescient. Senators and representatives likely will address USF subsidies, too, just as the FCC is poised to release some reform proposals. Online privacy also should be on the docket.

Just don’t expect any bills to stem from the attention paid to telecom and tech. It’s an election year, which means a lame-duck Congress, and with Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) no longer spearheading the Senate Commerce Committee, it’s anyone’s guess how far hearings and debates will actually go.
