They say the best companies are created during the down times. Perhaps Arista Networks, formerly known as Arastra, will be one such company.

Billionaire Andreas von Bechtolsheim, former chief architect at Sun Microsystems Inc. (JAVA), recently founded Arista Networks to deliver cloud networking solutions for large data center and computing environments. The company sells “best-of-breed” 10 gigabit Ethernet switches “that redefine scalability, robustness, and price–performance.” The company’s special sauce is its Extensible Operating System, a software-based architecture with self-healing and live in-service software upgrade capabilities.

The company today revealed Jayshree Ullal, formerly with Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO), has been named Arista’s chief executive.
