Google Inc. (GOOG), Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Tuesday they’ll operate on common principles for doing business in nations such as China that restrict free speech.
Each of the firms has faced criticism for helping those countries censor citizens because they’ve installed filters that keep users from accessing certain content. They’ve agreed to protect users’ privacy, among other provisions.
The Internet companies developed the document with the help of human rights groups, journalists and think tanks.
