Looks like contracts are still getting inked despite global market woes. On Friday Bell Canada Inc. and TELUS Corp. said sayonara to their existing CDMA 3G infrastructure plan, announcing plans (as expected) to jointly invest about $1 billion in a GSM overlay for their networks to be completed by the time the Olympics kick off in Vancouver in 2010.
The move to the global GSM standard, which will be done with equipment from Nokia Siemens Networks, will start with HSPA, and will eventually result in an LTE 4G network for the Canadian providers.
Rogers Communications Inc. has until now enjoyed status as Canada’s only major GSM wireless carrier, enjoying exclusive access to GSM-only devices like the iPhone.
