Verizon Wireless has confirmed that it is reassessing the text messaging rates that it charges its off-deck content providers. However, and here’s the :-( part, the operator’s not sure how much, exactly, it will raise them.
The initial reports on the situation stemmed from a circulated draft of the Verizon policy, which was far from finalized, the carrier explained. That draft floated the idea of adding an additional transaction fee of 3 cents per message — which nearly doubles the SMS overhead for content partners, who rely on SMS for notifications and billing.
Verizon said it is simply exploring ways to offset the steep increase in costs from the exponentially growing amount of SMS traffic that all providers are facing.
