Google Inc. (GOOG) shares pulled a Dana Torres on Wednesday, diving sharply and swiftly.

By about 3 p.m., the Internet giant’s shares had fluctuated between a high of $312.49 and a low of $292.94. It’s the first time since late 2005 that Google stock has fallen below $300.

Analysts and media attributed the drop to – what else? – fears about the economy. The tighter companies’ finances become, the more they’re going to pull back on marketing, including Google’s cash cow, online advertising.
