It’s official. Barack Obama has been named the 44th president of the United States, winning 52 percent of the popular vote and 338 electoral votes.
As has been widely reported, while both candidates used the Internet in their campaigns, Obama’s campaign, described by one political pundit as “masterful,” was extremely successful at mobilizing the electorate via the Internet to donate and volunteer. According to Wired magazine, volunteers used Obama's Web site to organize one thousand phone-banking events in the last week of the race ─ and 150,000 other campaign-related events during the campaign; myBarackObama.com has about 1.5 million accounts; and Obama raised $600 million in contributions from more than 3 million people, many of which came via the Internet.
