Procera DPI Pack Integrates With Current Carrier Systems

The race to provide carriers with systems that enable them to make more money from existing user data and network capacity is intensifying revenue-generation opportunities.

Just one week after deep pack inspection driver Zeugma Systems announced a pay-extra bandwidth capability for carriers with Roku, Procera Networks Inc. (PKT) has announced software that ties its offering into existing carrier systems.

Procera’s new PacketLogic Subscriber Manager (PSM) is a software suite that integrates the PacketLogic platform with surrounding network systems, such as authentication, policy management and billing, without requiring operators to do custom integrations.

The suite, the vendor contends, enables operators to bring personalized Internet bandwidth offerings and address potential congestion in networks. That’s in addition to fueling DPI-based behavioral advertising powered by monitoring consumers’ packets to determine Internet travels.

DPI-based advertising, though alluring, has met with opposition from net neutrality/privacy advocates and faces an uncertain future.

At the same time, DPI is an enabling technology that can help carriers better manage bandwidth capacity and develop new revenue models in these very tough economic times.

PSM can also connect to end-user portals to provide usage data and enable rules triggered by end-user selections, according to Procera. This puts more power in the hands of an end-user, which will unburden help desk resources and reduce subscriber churn, since a user has customized the service to suit their specific needs.

"Service creation has an immediate impact on service providers' bottom-line by resolving issues, increasing customer satisfaction and adding revenue-generating services," said Jon Lindén, vice president of global marketing for Procera, in prepared comments.

The company says it focuses on tier-one operators and claims to have several dozen customers overall, but has not named any in the U.S. market.

Pricing for the software suite was not provided.
