VoD systems giant SeaChange International Inc. (SEAC) today announced that its on-demand subsidiary has purchased Mobix Interactive, a provider of mobile video and TV services in Europe, Middle East and African mobile markets.

The move brings SeaChange into the wireless space and is designed to enable TV operators to expand their VoD services to mobile phones. Mobix enables the deployment of premium and ad-based mobile video and TV services.

The value of the deal was not disclosed.

SeaChange’s On Demand Group (ODG) unit delivers on-demand service creation, content aggregation and management for television companies including Virgin Media, Telekom Austria, OTE and TTNET, while Mobix’s managed service approach brings a proven and successful business model within the burgeoning mobile media industry.

The acquisition agreement, SeaChange says, makes ODG the only full-service partner to enable managed network owners to tap into both markets. ODG intends to bring to mobile carriers its content rights management, distribution and retail marketing capabilities.

ODG, the company added, already has relationships with top studios such as Paramount, NBC Universal and Warner Bros., as well as major record labels, television networks and regional content producers.

ODG’s London-based state-of-the-art, full service television centre and European headquarters “will integrate Mobix’s nearby operations and workforce.” ODG managing director and SeaChange senior vice president Tony Kelly is heading the expansion.
