The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), prominent as a planning and standards development organization, has elected John Donovan, AT&T chief technology officer, chairman of the ATIS Board of Directors.

ATIS also elected Matt Bross, BT Group CTO, as secretary and re-elected Harold Braun, president of Harris Stratex Networks, as treasurer.

Other officers include: Nick Adamo, senior vice president of Cisco Systems, as first vice chairman and Mark Wegleitner, senior vice president of Verizon, as second vice chairman.

The new naming will provide ATIS with representatives form three of the world’s largest telcos – AT&T, Verizon and BT – all of whom have long been very active in ATIS.

AT&T’s Donovan will assume the chairmanship in January 2009. Donovan succeeds Christopher Rice, executive vice president, Shared Services of AT&T, who has served as ATIS chairman since early 2007.

As AT&T’s CTO, Donovan oversees the company's global technology direction and innovation road map, including product development, network and engineering operations, AT&T Labs and the security and intellectual property organizations, says ATIS. Donovan joined AT&T in April 2008. Prior to that time, he served as executive vice president of Product, Sales, Marketing and Operations at VeriSign, Inc.

“I want to congratulate John on his election to the chairmanship,” said Susan Miller, ATIS President and CEO, in prepared comments. “Given his experience, John is well suited to provide the association with clear vision and direction. He will make an excellent chairman.”

ATIS describes itself as a planning and standards development organization that is committed to “rapidly developing and promoting technical and operations standards for the communications and related information technologies industry worldwide using a pragmatic, flexible and open approach.”

The group claims participants from more than 300 communications companies are active in ATIS’ industry committees and Incubator Solutions Program.
