DS2 Plans Chipset For ITU Home Net Standard

Just days after the ITU ratified a specification designed to consolidate home networking options over a single wireline connection, DS2 announced it’s working on a compatible chipset due out as early as next year.

The new ITU standard, dubbed G.hn, supports high-speed transmission over phones lines, coaxial cable and powerline systems. By supporting multiple approaches, the approach hopes to eliminate fragmentation in home networking and simplify chip and product development.

It does not appear, however, that the ITU standard addresses wireless networking options, which have been implemented by some telco TV providers.

DS2, which makes chips, didn’t say specifically when the new chips would be commercially available, nor did it say roughly how long after that milestone service providers could expect to see home networking products that support G.hn.

The ITU says G.hn/G.9960 will provide “up to 20 times the throughput of existing wireless technologies and three times that of existing wired technologies.”

“The DSS9960 is designed to meet ever increasing bandwidth requirements and will provide much higher performance than available products today, at a very low cost,” said Jorge Blasco, DS2’s CEO, in prepared comments. “By ensuring compliance to the ITU G.hn standard we are helping to build a unified market for wireline products.”

G.hn participants include service providers, consumer electronics and IT product-makers, manufacturers, and component and intellectual property providers from around the world.
