Equinix (EQIX), a provider of global data center services, has announced what it says is the only service in the U.S. that enables the exchange of mobile Internet traffic between telecommunications service providers.

Previously available in Singapore, the expansion of Equinix’s GRX Peering @ Equinix (GPE) service will cover customers located in the company’s Washington, D.C. area International Business Exchange (IBX) data center campus.

The company says GPE features a resilient, fully-managed, Ethernet-based switching platform designed to ensure the seamless interconnectivity between mobile networks.

“After a successful introduction of a GRX peering point in Asia with Equinix, we are pleased that the North American peering point in the Washington, D.C. area is ready for service and a number of GRX service providers are concluding contractual agreements,” said Robindhra Mangtani, director, Interworking and Roaming at the GSM Association.
