In anticipation of an economic stimulus package for 2009, Free Press already is planning for ways to spend the money.
The consumer advocacy group proposes the United States government spend $44 billion on broadband buildouts.
Free Press would like to see the $44 billion allocated over three years because that immediately would produce “tens of thousands of new technology-sector jobs” and generate “hundreds of billions of dollars in economic activity,” the group said in a press release. Free Press also clarified the tax incentives and grant programs it’s proposing are meant to trigger new investments, “not to fund projects previously planned by incumbent telecommunications companies.”
