Hawaii’s largest telephone company is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Hawaiian Telcom Communications Inc., owned by private-equity firm Carlyle Group, has been working to restructure its $1 billion debt since October, but economic strains have caught up with the carrier.
The company stressed to customers that it’s not going out of business and service won’t be interrupted.
Carlyle Group bought Hawaiian Telcom from Verizon Communications Inc.(VZ) three years ago.
