Free-speech advocates have gotten their way, at least regarding FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s free wireless Internet proposal.
Martin, known for his conservative views on Janet Jackson’s skin and Bono’s fleeting expletives, has removed the clause that would make a nationwide wireless network porn-free. He told Ars Technica yesterday that there was too much resistance to his desire to censor images people might find inappropriate, so he is circulating a new draft of his plan.
The FCC as-is is scheduled to hold its last meeting on Jan. 15, five days before President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration. If Martin can pass this new version of the wireless Internet idea, he’ll have defied lawmakers and ended his chairmanship on a legacy-esque note.
