President-elect Barack Obama is nearly done naming his cabinet, but the communications industry – and Janet Jackson – still is waiting to hear who will become the new FCC chairman (or woman). Word is, the news won’t come until January sometime.

A number of names fit the candidates bill, with the latest speculation putting Julius Genachowski – a former Harvard Law student with Obama – at the top of the contender’s list. As we’ve said before, that doesn’t seem to make much sense and we, like some other folks, are wondering if Obama’s mantra of change is turning out to be the same old story of cronies filling prime, plush appointments.

We hope not. We really, really hope not.

Nonetheless, whomever Obama chooses, chances are it won’t be someone as obsessed with fleeting expletives and SuperBowl-related wardrobe issues as Kevin Martin has proved to be.
