2Wire Inc. today introduced the HomePortal GEM platform, a home gateway with modules that enable operators to equip it to serve as or support cordless phone DECT base stations, femtocells, home control interfaces and intelligent home servers.
The new HomePortal GEM platform consists of the HomePortal GEM intelligent gateway, GEM software, and a selection of GEM gateway expansion models.
The GEM platform uses modules, as well as software, applications, and management systems to support different functions. An application software development kit and snap-on hardware modules provide service providers flexibility in their offerings.
The first wave of GEM applications is expected to include technology from companies such as Logitech, OpenDNS, and SharedBand, according to 2Wire, which added that new third-party applications will include home surveillance, home automation, digital media server, and digital life backup services, among others.
The gateway can manage a variety of devices on the home network, including off-the-shelf digital cameras, NAS disks, motion sensors, and music players, according to the vendor.
GEM Gateway expansion modules enable the platform to operate as the following:
- GEM Topaz supports a DECT base station cordless phone system;
- GEM Sapphire provides a home control interface, consolidating control of the digital home;
- GEM Emerald enables the platform to operate as an intelligent home server, simplifying personal media and data management;
- GEM Ruby supports femtocell mobile base station functionality, improving mobile phone coverage in the home; and
- GEM Amethyst provides 3G wireless WAN functionality, delivering broadband over a 3G link.
The gateway supports home networking approaches including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB 2.0.
2Wire says initial samples of the 2Wire HomePortal GEM platform are currently being evaluated by service providers, with volume shipment expected at an unspecified time this year.
The vendor did not provide pricing for the platform or the expansion modules.
