Bandwidth Management for Revenue or Enforcement?

Equipped with the tools needed to better manage their bandwidth, service providers need to decide — if they haven’t already — whether to derive new revenue from pay-extra Internet tiers, or to identify and shut down bandwidth hogs.

Given that many already know who the bandwidth abusers are and how much of all capacity they are using (and have updated their acceptable use policies accordingly), it would seem a high priority to derive new revenue in a badly beat-up economy.

Sure, the P.R. hit could be hard, but bringing in money, especially new money, in the toughest of recent industry times, would seem optimal and possibly even understood when most everyone is focused on dollars.

New president and administration or not, bet on bucks from bandwidth and watch for behavioral Web advertising to re-emerge and possibly be the lightening rod itself.
