Though Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) is best known for operator network infrastructure and system integration services, and likely few in those markets have heard of ICO Global Communications (ICOG), the duo teamed to demo the DVB TV standard for vehicles at this week’s international Consumer Electronics Show.

While the concept and reality of vehicles being equipped with communications capabilities needed to make it an office-on-wheels are not new, providing cars with entertainment services such as TV programming is.

Whether already available DVD players in cars and other vehicles provide some measure of infotainment, actual TV programming could prove appealing as a second layer of content.

How mobile TV services for vehicles are offered and priced is likely just as important as the underlying enabling technologies and add-on products.
