Starting this spring, some Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) flat-panel HD TVs will come with Yahoo!-provided widgets and related technology, the companies announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
The Yahoo! (YHOO) Widget Engine is a fifth-generation applications platform that enables viewers to access a variety of widgets involving brands such as eBay, Flickr, Showtime Networks, USA TODAY, Yahoo! and YouTube to track their stocks, check headline news, browse and share videos and photos, and interact with friends. And developers are invited to use an open-platform toolkit to create their own widgets for this application.
Samsung’s support of widgets on its TV follows by one year its introduction of InfoLink service.
