It seems everyone’s talking broadband as part of an economic stimulus package that has yet to be laid out in full. And it seems everyone has an opinion about what will work and what won’t.
One of the biggest concerns is how broadband will be defined. The FCC, recall, still thinks 768kbps qualifies as broadband (at that rate, a movie download takes a little more than two hours, pundits say). Well, some providers are pushing the Obama transition team to define acceptable broadband speeds and recommending a minimum of 7mbps.
All fine and good, we suppose. But of course, there’s continuing debate over the extent broadband will truly jumpstart job growth in a country that just hit a 16-year high in unemployment rates.
