The U.S. Senate is considering increasing the amount of money it will underwrite for broadband buildout in an economic stimulus plan.
Federal lawmakers are talking about boosting the funding from $6 million to $9 million, with $1 billion allotted to wireless. Some officials also want to include a 10 percent tax credit for companies building in rural and underserved markets. There’s also an incentive of a 20 percent tax credit for providers that exceed “current speeds,” Reuters reported.
As always, though, there’s a holdup. This time, it’s over net neutrality and whether the federal government can require operators to run open networks.
