Why DPI Makes Sense for Service Providers

It’s well understand in these parts that DPI, or deep packet inspection, sends up red flags with consumer rights advocates and regulators concerned about privacy. However, the potential upside of DPI is just too great to ignore.

And now we’re starting to see deep packet inspection applied to business services. For example, as reported recently by xchangeXO Communications (XOHO) has introduced new tools, based on DPI technology, that provide MPLS IP-VPN customers with more visibility into and control of their applications running over those networks. That can range from traffic such as voice over IP and video, to point-of-sale transactions, to business applications provided by the likes of Oracle Corp. (ORCL) and SAP (SAP).
