There’s almost nothing more annoying than being inundated with phone directories, many holding redundant information, every year. They take up valuable closet or drawer space and, with the Internet, what’s the point of wasting all those trees?

AT&T Inc. (T), apparently, agrees. The carrier is testing consumer acceptance of paperless telephone directories; it’s condensing all that data onto CD-ROMs in a couple of markets.

There’s still no definitive assessment of the pilot project.
