Juniper’s TX Matrix Plus Enables Network Integration

One of the great advantages of IP is its ability to carry a variety of services and applications. But, in fact, most service providers have had to build multiple IP networks to handle different services because those services have different requirements, including varying QoS needs, growth rates, partnerships and equipment depreciation schedules, said Luc Ceuppens, senior director, head of product marketing for the High-End Systems Business unit at Juniper. To enable those service providers to collapse those multiple networks and “virtualize” their networks for cost savings, Juniper today introduced the TX Matrix Plus.

The TX Matrix Plus, a multichassis solution for use in core networks, integrates up to sixteen of Juniper’s existing T1600 routers. The TX Matrix Plus also works with Juniper’s existing Juniper Control System 1200 to allow a single network to support multiple services, each service running on a separate VPN with its own unique settings, said Ceuppens. But rather than those VPNs being logical, or software based, this virtualization is hardware-based. As a result, those individual routers and blades effectively become part a larger system, and each slot in the router can share common equipment like power supplies. “That lowers total cost of ownership by delivering up to 25 percent more routing capacity in the half the footprint, and with up to 40 percent less power than competing solutions,” according to Juniper.

Also today Juniper has come out with new integrated G.709 optical transport network (OTN) interfaces and GMPLS features, which eliminate the need for standalone optical transponders.

Juniper did not disclose the price of the TX Matrix Plus and said it’s still working on ROI models around the solution.
