As Mobile World Congress kicked off today in Bercelona, it’s becoming clear that the as-yet-noncommercial 4G mobile broadband technology known as LTE is a big focus for vendors at the event. Motorola Inc. decided to add a real-world component to the discussion by demonstrating mobile applications over an ad-hoc LTE network while driving around the streets of the Catalonian capital.
Thanks to a big blue van and two single-sector eNodeB base stations that operate in the 2.6GHz spectrum band, Moto was able to show streaming HD video content and a Google maps plug-in that tracked the van’s progress through las calles. Back at the booth, attendees could live HD video blog with the crew in the van.
The exercise also proved out seamless site-to-site handovers.
Peak data rates hit 29mbps but the whole set-up was meant to perform at its best at 15mbps on the downlink.
