The quest for U.S. market share is apparently as capable as politics of making strange bedfellows. Former Rivals Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) announced at the Mobile World Congress they will work together to develop next-generation cell phones for the U.S. market. They expect the phones to hit the market by the middle of next year.
Finland-based Nokia and California-based Qualcomm were locked in a courtroom dispute over a patent dispute until late last year, when Nokia agreed to pay royalties to Qualcomm. Under the terms of the newly announced agreement, Nokia will for the first time produce phones that use Qualcomm chips.
