Mobile World Congress was expected to host a flurry of news about handsets based on Google Inc.’s Android mobile operating system, but the results are so far not so shiny: Samsung said its Android device was never slated to launch at the show, contrary to pre-MWC reports, while T-Mobile USA G1-maker HTC dodged questions as to when its next Android devices would be launched. HTC President Peter Chou said more Android phones are part of the roadmap but that Windows Mobile is a big focus for the company.
For its part, LG said that it was planning to launch Android phones—sometime before the end of the year. And Huawei Technologies said it was targeting the third quarter for an Android devices.
So no big Android news for MWC? That might not be true: The U.K’s Guardian newspaper is reporting that Vodafone is close to signing a deal with HTC for the “G2” Android device, with an announcement coming this week, possibly.
