Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. is A-No. 1, baby, when it comes to optical. In fact, it grew in the area even as the overall market shrank.

The vendor has captured the lead position in the Metro WDM and ROADM areas in North America for 2008, according to research firm Ovum Ltd, which tracks such things. Together, these sectors make up nearly 60 percent of the $4.7 billion optical networking market.

“The company posted its fifth consecutive year of growth and outperformed the market, with 2008 revenues rising 14 percent as compared to a market decline of 4 percent,” said Ron Kline, research director of optical networks in North America at Ovum. “Fujitsu increased its North American overall optical networking share by nearly 2.5 points, capitalizing on metro network growth and its strong incumbent positions with Tier 1 carriers.”

Fujitsu also increased its share in the opteical aggregation segment by nearly three points to 31.5 percent, which is more than 10 percentage points higher than its closest competitor.
