The Department of Justice says it will drop former Alaska senator Ted Stevens’ 2008 corruption conviction because prosecutors withheld evidence in his trial.
Stevens – former head of the Senate Commerce Committee, which oversees telecom – was found guilty of falsifying data on financial disclosure forms. Attorney General Eric Holder this week concluded there should be no new trial because the government, he said, mishandled the case.
Judge Emmett Sullivan, who presided over the trial, has said the same for months.
It’s unclear whether Stevens will regain his Senate seat.
