Twitter: Google’s Just a Friend

It seems that Twitter doesn’t want to be married off to some big, strong Web 2.0 company after all. Despite a passel of rumors on Friday that the microblogging service was looking for a match in Google Inc., co-founder Biz Stone says that Google’s just someone Twitter talks to.

"It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects," Stone wrote in a blog post about the rumor, launched when TechCruch posted a note that two trusted sources had “confirmed” Google’s interest acquiring Twitter. Stone debunked the idea, and stressed that Twitter’s goal is to remain an independent company.

He did point to an ad for a business development manager the company’s been running, which says it’s looking for someone to identify “strategic partnerships.”

Twitter looked set to merge with Facebook before talks broke down, and then received a $250 million valuation – leading many industry watchers to see it as a ripe acquisition target.
