Google is like the Montreal Canadiens in the ‘70s, the New York Yankees in the '50s, the San Francisco 49ers of the ‘80s and the Chicago Bulls of the ‘90s – dominant forces that appear to be unstoppable.
Data provider Hitwise just released the search engine statistics for April. Google’s share of U.S. searches was almost 73 percent, about the same as it was in March. Yahoo and MSN were second and third, respectively, but they are hardly in the game at this point.
Hitwise sampled 10 million U.S. Internet users. Google seems to be strengthening its position. A year ago, it accounted for (only) 68 percent of Internet searches.
Hot search categories, according to Hitwise, include social networking, sports, online video and business/finance. All recorded double-digit increases in their share of traffic coming from search engines compared to one year ago.
