SDN Communications, a Sioux Falls, S.D.-based regional service provider, has selected the ECI Telecom CESR SR9700 Carrier Ethernet Switch Router platform to support its fiber-optic network – the largest in the upper Midwest – and expand its Carrier Ethernet-based services.

SDN Communications and its owners, 18 of South Dakota's independent telephone companies, operate a 21,000 mile fiber-optic network. SDN is a business-to-business provider of broadband services, including connectivity, Internet, network surveillance, networking equipment and unified communications systems.

“The flexibility and cost-effectiveness of ECI's product were important elements in our decision to work with them on this project,” said Tom Durfee, director of network planning and operations for SDN in a press statement. “ECI’s 9700 series enables us to implement a converged all-IP network for both business and residential services, with scalable quality of service (QoS) and intelligent IP/MPLS, enabling efficient network design – a key advantage in today's dynamic environment."

ECI’s CESR SR9700 was introduced in spring 2008 along with its framework, 1Net, which describes the vendor’s end-to-end approach to helping service providers migrate to next-generation networks at their own pace.
