Intel Capital, the venture capital division of the chipmaker of the same name, is pumping $43 million into WiMAX operator UQ Communications.
Tokyo-based UQ will use the investment to turn its network, in test mode, into the world’s fastest WiMAX service. Download speeds will hit 40mbps and uploads will go as fast as 10mpbs. The official launch is supposed to happen in July.
So far the network covers Tokyo, Kawasaki (the city, not the motorcycle) and Yokohama. UQ plans to expand to more cities throughout the year, canvassing more than 90 percent of Japan’s population by 2012.
