Establishing the fastest undersea link to date between North America and the continent of Europe, Hibernia Atlantic said it has upped the native capacity of its trans-Atlantic cable to 40 Gbps. Hibernia thus becomes the first carrier to offer a 40G network across the Atlantic.

A U.S. subsidiary of Columbia Ventures Corp., Hibernia Atlantic has more than 70 POPS across the U.S., Canada and Europe, and operates a 24,000-kilometer network, both submarine and terrestrial. The company is expanding rapidly in Europe, having recently opened sales offices in London, Paris and Amsterdam.

Hibernia CEO Bjarni Thorvardarson said the new link is a response to explosive bandwidth demand from North American users, fueled by next-gen services like Web conferencing, streaming video, and multimedia.

“This offering provides global investment banks, CDNs, broadcasters, international PTTs and ISPs in need of high-bandwidth a better network solution,” said Thorvardarson in a statement.

The 40G link brings the total theoretical capacity of the Hibernia’s undersea Atlantic system to 10.16Tbps.
