Comcast vs. Verizon Ads Like ‘Soda Wars’

Remember the 1980’s “soda wars” when Coke and Pepsi fought for the world heavyweight cola title with every ad a left hook or right cross? Well, something akin to that is brewing between Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. over TV in some markets.

The Boston Globe reports the two companies are airing competing commercials – sometimes back-to-back – in a tit for tat in its home state: “Some Comcast ads feature informed customers defending their cable provider to a pushy Verizon installer who appears at their front door or inside their car, while Verizon ads feature a young, friendly installer explaining the benefits of Verizon’s fiber-optic TV service called FiOS to a dopey cable guy.”

While there are other providers, the two companies have boiled it down to us vs. them, analysts say. And like the cola contenders, it’s not about price, but which is better.
