IPTV adoption in North America grew 85 percent over the last 12 months, according to new data from Point Topic for the Broadband Forum.
Driven by two leading operators, IPTV adoption in North America now serves more than 5 million subscribers as of second quarter 2009, up from 2.7 million a year ago for the same quarter in 2008.
North American subscribers now account for 18.6 percent of the total IPTV market. Worldwide subscribers are at 26.9 million, up from 17.1 million a year ago.
A plurality of the market (46 percent) is in the region covering Western Europe, Middle East and Africa) with 12.4 million subscribers, the research firm reported. North America holds the No. 2 spot with South and East Asia coming in a close third at 4.4 million subscribers, and Asia Pacific fourth with 3.8 million.
