Sony Ericsson says it’s not the company rumored to be keen on buying Nortel Networks Corp.’s stake in the LG-Nortel venture.

A news story from South Korea on Wednesday said Sony Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent are prepared to vie for Nortel’s share in the LG deal.

Alcatel-Lucent is the other company being posited as an acquirer, but representatives wouldn’t comment on the rumor to Reuters or other news outlets.

Such a purchase certainly seems like it would be good for Sony Ericsson or Alcatel-Lucent. The LG-Nortel combination makes unified communications hardware, a burgeoning market.

Nortel earlier this year said it is looking for another company to buy its LG stake. China-based equipment maker Huawei was thought to be one of the key contenders.
