MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS — Paving the way for wireless carriers’ migration to 4G networks, VoIP applications provider BroadSoft today said it has extended its BroadWorks platform to include a range of mobility capabilities. Called the BroadWorks Mobility Suite, the new platform was introduced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Designed to work with 2G and 3G networks as well as forthcoming LTE and WiMAX systems, the new suite gives carriers the ability to offer new mobile features such as native SS7 support over a variety of protocols, location-based call routing, and short message services across any IP-enabled device, including desk phones, PC-based soft-phones or Web-capable consumer handsets. The most significant addition is the extension of BroadSoft’s popular SIP trunking for service providers to enterprise mobile devices using a premises-based management application. Mobile SIP trunking allows enterprise IT directors to control company-owned smartphones from a central PBX.

“With BroadWorks Mobility Suite, mobile operators can pursue new markets, enabling them to increase revenues, improve profit margins and grow average revenue per user (ARPU),” the company said in a statement.

While much of the attention at the world’s largest trade show for mobile and wireless communications will be consumed by new devices, vendors are also showcasing important new developments around wireless broadband, including the new version of Windows Mobile, from Microsoft (MSFT). Wireless carriers will spend as much as $72 billion to roll out mobile broadband infrastructure and services in 2010, the GSM Association reported last week. Citing figures from Deutsche Bank, the GSMA said that broadband offerings will account for over half of all operator investment in mobile and wireless infrastructure, including 80 percent in North America.

The new mobile platform from BroadSoft comprises two suites: Mobile Unified Communications, for businesses, and Mobile Consumer Experience.
