MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS — Gear-maker GENBAND Inc. this week introduced its interconnect platform for fixed and mobile networks, announced its support for the GSM Association’s (GSMA) voice-over-LTE initiative and talked up its work in the femtocell sector.

The interconnect product uses GENBAND’s IP media and session border controllers to help operators move voice traffic over all kinds of networks. And thanks to VoIP, TDM doesn’t cut it anymore. The answer, then, is to support TDM and IP signaling, GENBAND said. Its platform does just that.

“Our solution also encourages revenue growth by allowing operators to expand their network capabilities and services, as well as extend their brand across new market segments and geographies,” Mehmet Baos, GENBAND’s chief marketing officer, in a prepared statement.

Meantime, GENBAND joined a number of Tier 1 telecom providers in saying it supports the GSMA’s push for delivering voice and messaging over LTE networks. The best way to do that is to rely on the IMS standard, GENBAND said.

“IMS offers operators a solution that meets the stringent requirements for the delivery of voice and SMS while allowing them to offer rich communication services,” Baos explained. To that end, Baos added, GENBAND “supports the development of GSMA specifications that will enable interconnection and international roaming between LTE networks.”

Finally, GENBAND weighed in on the femtocell discussion at Mobile World Congress. Attendees including operators, vendors and analysts were talking about the access points designed to intensify cellular coverage through a broadband connection. For its part, GENBAND emphasized security in femtocell deployments and the need for an open-standards, interoperable approach to the equipment’s development.
