Helping service providers find ways to monetize the rich stream of personal data that flows across their networks, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) said it’s launching a Subscriber Data Management system.

HP Subscriber Data Management “enables service providers to integrate the valuable customer (subscriber) data that is dispersed across an organization in multiple repositories,” the company said in a statement.

Subscriber data management has become a buzzword for telcos as they realize the potential to offer targeted ads, offers, and services to customers based on their lifestyles, habits, and buying patterns – all of which can to some degree be traced via their activity on mobile devices. SDM can “create a unified, in-depth view of each customer ... that helps service providers assemble an integrated picture of their customers’ profiles.”

If that sounds vaguely Orwellian, just wait till 4G wireless broadband, such as LTE networks, becomes widely available. Speedier networks, smarter devices, and customized Web-based applications will all provide richer sources of information about subscribers’ daily lives – information that service providers are eager to use to build personalized, revenue-generating services and applications.

“In the LTE world of unlimited customer choice, HP SDM can help service providers break down data silos, transform their business and ultimately offer subscribers a more rewarding experience,” said Dave Sliter, vice president for communications and media solutions at HP.

The core of HP’s SDM system, HP Unified profile, “provides a single, virtual view of all personal, contextual and behavioral information about each customer.” It comprises two key software elements: HP Virtual Identity & Profile Broker, which federates data, and HP OpenCall Profile Manager, where the consolidated data resides.
