Following its win last summer with Videotron to provide mobile messaging, roaming and anti-fraud solutions for its new 3G network, Syniverse proved it is making good on its plans to capture the burgeoning wireless opportunity among cable operators with new business from Cox Communications.
As one of the few cable operators that acquired spectrum, Cox tapped Syniverse to support its CDMA mobile voice network and provide a suite of mobile messaging, roaming and network solutions. Syniverse also will continue to support Cox’s SS7 class services.
“We have been working with Cox since the end of 2008 with initial projects as they were rolling out their infrastructure,” said Alfred de Cárdenas, executive vice president of the Americas at Syniverse.
In addition to cable companies, Syniverse is eyeing opportunity again in North America as other new entrants to mobile, such as Internet, VoIP and application service providers need roaming solutions and other network services, Cárdenas said. “And when you look at the cable space in general, all providers are looking to move to the quad play,” he said.
However, many MSOs and other providers will do so with the help of a Clearwire or some other wireless partner. Either way, they must secure roaming capabilities. “They need to provide a ubiquitous service to their customers irrespective of where those customers travel in the U.S. or internationally,” Cárdenas said.
Syniverse is already a supplier to most wireless operators in North America as well as others around the world. At Cox, the company will deploy its NEXT messaging solution, SMS Interworking Gateway (SMS-IG) and MMS Interworking Gateway (MMS-IG).
Also, Syniverse’s Data Clearing House for CDMA, ACCESS, and Financial Settlement Services will provide an end-to-end clearing process. The company’s Visibility Services will provide near real-time data about inbound and outbound roamers.
Stephen Bye, Cox’s vice president of wireless, said the Syniverse solutions provide the necessary tools to deliver a high-quality mobile experience for Cox customers.
