CTIA Wireless — Fresh off its acquisition of Nortel’s Carrier VoIP assets, GENBAND is making a series of announcements at this week’s CTIA Wireless Show in Las Vegas.

First, the company is introducing a series of access, interconnect and media adaptation solutions that support mobile and fixed network transitions to IMS. With its portfolio of carrier grade, IMS-ready gateways and session border controllers (SBCs), GENBAND says it is reducing the required number of managed network elements by providing enhanced IP connectivity, adaptation and security at the edges of the IMS network.

IMS Solution Zones are particularly valuable at critical locations in the IP-to-IP network edge, including IP Access, IP Interconnect and Media Services. In the IP Access and Interconnect Zones, GENBAND delivers access and interconnect SBC functions, namely the Proxy and Emergency Call and Session Control Function (P/E-CSCF) and Interconnect Border Control Function (I-BCF). GENBAND’s S Series SBC platforms – including the S9 Session Border Controller, the highest capacity SBC on the market ¬– provide border security, session management, adaptation and policy control, as well as “any-to-any” connectivity at IMS network edges, according to the company. These platforms enable service providers to reduce costs, expand markets and provide IMS interworking with the growing volume of IP peering and managed interconnect services like the GSM Association’s IP eXchange (IPX).

In addition GENBAND announced a suite of mobile data offload solutions to support service providers as they tackle the exponential growth of mobile data consumption driven by the increase in smartphones and intelligent wireless devices. By offloading data traffic from 3G networks through Wi-Fi and femtocell infrastructure, GENBAND says it offers mobile operators secure, multi-access network solutions to reduce network congestion.

In a third announcement, the company introduced the addition of border gateway functionality to its G9 Converged Gateway. Adding this feature creates a powerful user plane IP gateway that significantly reduces CapEx and OpEx for service providers deploying IMS networks by consolidating functionality into a single platform, according to GENBAND.

“The accelerating use of IP and IMS deployments by fixed and mobile operators is driving increasing demand for border gateway functionality,” said Micaela Giuhat, vice president of Product Line Management at GENBAND. “By integrating robust border gateway capabilities into the G9, operators are now able to leverage our market-leading media gateway platform to address the demand for any-to-any IMS network border and transcoding requirements in a single, cost-saving solution.”

Finally, GENBAND said it would participate in Femtozone 2010 at CTIA Wireless and demonstrate the latest advances in femtocell gateway security and interoperability, along with the company’s entire femtocell gateway solution.
