VoiceCon — The Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions unit released its latest hosted IP communications platform that enables service providers to meet enterprise requirements for IP business lines, mobility, call center and unified communications functionality regardless of their existing enterprise infrastructure.
Speaking from VoiceCon where the platform debuted this week, Rob Scheible, Nortel’s senior marketing manager for IP communications, said unlike other solutions Nortel does not require service providers to rip and replace enterprise infrastructure. Instead, the platform can work across any combination of hosted IP or TDM (Centrex) or premises-based IP PBX or TDM PBX. This, in turn, enables service providers to serve customers immediately and migrate them over time to a fully hosted IP solution.
Scheible said Nortel has spent the last three years enhancing SIP to support business features, such as mobility, call center and UC, across different potential customer environments.
A follow-on to the platform rolled out for small and midsize business some 18 months ago, the system is designed for enterprises of 1,000 or more users. The upsized platform is being used by BT and Optus, which are deploying it, respectively, with government clients, one of Nortel’s key vertical targets for the solution. Financial services and education sectors are two additional targets.
The solution, powered by Nortel’s CS 2000 softswitch and Adaptive Application Server, scales from thousands to millions of lines and offers powerful carrier-grade reliability and geographic survivability.
CVAS is in the Nortel unit that GENBAND is expected to acquire. The purchase was approved by the bankruptcy courts earlier this month. The transaction is expected to close in second quarter.
