CTIA Wireless — Nokia Siemens Networks and Samsung Electronics say they’re demonstrating the world’s first interoperable voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) calls.
The two telecom equipment vendors have set up an LTE network at the CTIA Wireless show where they’re proving that standards-compliant VoLTE calls can take place among different suppliers’ gear. In the United States, the calls use the 700MHz band.
Nokia Siemens and Samsung are working from laptops installed with VoLTE clients. Those computers are then connected to the LTE network through a special Samsung dongle.
“This demo is a defining moment for us,” said Yunsang Park, vice president of Samsung’s telecom R&D center, in a prepared statement. “Full interoperability with Nokia Siemens Networks’ LTE network infrastructure and its own VoLTE client takes us one step closer to commercial deployments and showcases the viability of our products.”
Tommi Uitto, head of network systems product management at Nokia Siemens, agreed.
“We are commercially ready for global LTE deployments and that our end-to-end LTE ecosystem is fully interoperable with leading vendor devices,” Uitto said in a press release.
